Insights into leadership, learning, and living our CCS values
One of the questions I’m often asked is: “What exactly does a Head of School do all day?” The short answer? A lot. The long answer? It’s a blend of strategy, relationships, and a commitment to putting students at the center of every decision.
At Canggu Community School (CCS), my role as Head of School is a dynamic mix of leadership, stewardship, and community building — always grounded in our core values of learning, respect, balance, and engagement. This week, I’d like to take you behind the scenes for a peek into what a typical day looks like.
Every morning at ccsbali.com, the day begins before students arrive with our Principals meeting with Mr. Mike and Mr Warren/Ms. Hulks. I like to be visible — whether that means greeting students and parents at the front gate or walking around our beautiful campus to see the energy of learning in action. These morning moments matter. They allow me to connect with students, chat with teachers, parents, and staff and get a pulse on the school day ahead.
By mid-morning, I’m often in strategic meetings — sometimes with our academic leadership team, sometimes with the operations crew, and often with both. Whether we’re reviewing student well-being data, refining our sustainability practices, or planning professional development for faculty, all decisions are aligned to our CCS Strategic Plan.
This plan was collaboratively developed with input from all community members and is rooted in international best practices and deeply reflective of our local context here in Bali. It guides everything from curriculum innovation to campus enhancements. If you're curious to explore more about our school’s vision, it's all outlined at ccsbali.com.
In the afternoon, I try carve out time for “learning walks” — informal classroom visits where I get to witness our incredible students and teachers in action. From collaborative science experiments in Year 8 to student-led discussions in the IB Diploma Programme, these moments are the heartbeat of our school.
I also use this time to connect with students and staff one-on-one. Leadership isn’t just about policies — it’s about people. And ensuring every voice feels heard is essential to a thriving school culture.
The day usually wraps with parent meetings, reviewing feedback, or preparing for the next community communication. Some days involve working late into the evening with international partners or advisory boards across time zones. But no matter how full the calendar is, I always take a moment at the end of each day to ask:
Being Head of School at CCS Bali is not just a job — it’s a privilege. It’s about creating an environment where students are challenged and supported, where teachers feel inspired, and where families feel like true partners in the learning journey.
So yes, it’s a full day. But when the purpose is this clear — and the community this special — every day is one worth showing up for.
Thanks for reading and for being part of the CCS story.
Warm regards from paradise,
Dr. Ben Voborsky
