IGCSE

Introduction

Print

As an approved and registered Cambridge International Centre (CIC), CCS will teach Cambridge's International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) courses from August 2009. CIE, a part of Cambridge University, is a not-for-profit organisation and is the world’s largest provider of international qualifications for 14-19 year olds. Pupils are generally sixteen years of age when they complete the two-year course, taught in Years 10 and 11. It is possible to complete some IGCSE subjects more quickly, with intensive study.

At CCS, pupils are encouraged to choose subjects that help them gain the International Certificate of Education (ICE) offered by CIE. It is possible to progress to A Level or other pre-university courses such as International Baccalaureate and US Advanced Placement without the ICE, providing the required number of subjects and grades have been achieved.

At all times, pupils are encouraged to gain knowledge and skills that will allow them to successfully take their place in any educational or employment environment around the world and to develop a positive attitude to life-long learning.

The Subjects

IGCSEIn total, CCS is able to offer over twenty IGCSE subjects. However, the number taught to pupils each year will vary according to the number of pupils and their selections.

CIE has separated the subjects into five areas:

  • Languages
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • Business, Creative, Technical and Vocational.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) support may be offered to pupils whose first language is not English. This need will be determined by CCS’ teachers, in accordance with the School’s policy.

Assessment and Examinations

Print

Coursework is continually assessed at CCS and is incorporated into final IGCSE grades whenever possible. To ensure that approved CIE standards are maintained, work is sent to CIE as required, to be moderated externally.

Grading for IGCSE subjects is on an eight-point scale (A*–G). A grade of C or above is regarded as a very good level.

IGCSE examinations will generally be completed in May/June. However, it will be possible for pupils to sit examinations in the November after they have completed the course for any subject.

Certificates

Print

Pupils are awarded certificates for each IGCSE subject that they pass. These are widely recognised by higher education institutions and employers around the world as evidence of academic ability.

International Certificate of Education (ICE)

The ICE is awarded to pupils who pass at least seven subjects, including two languages and one from each of the other subject areas. The ICE is evidence of achievement in a broad and balanced curriculum. CIE regards a grade G or better as a pass.

To increase the number of IGCSE subjects from which pupils may select, some courses may be offered outside normal school hours. Any lessons for these courses that are held before school will commence at 7:30am and finish at 8:15am. Any lessons after school will generally commence at 3:45pm and finish at 4:30pm.
