Key Stage 3

Introduction

Print
Key Stage 3 includes Years 7, 8 and 9, with pupils ranging from eleven to fourteen years of age. During this stage of their education, pupils undergo considerable change in their physical, social and emotional development. In these year groups, pupils have an increased number of specialist teachers and they move from one classroom to another for a greater number of subjects.

Curriculum

Key Stage 3Pupils in Key Stage 3 receive a British style of education through the delivery of the National Curriculum for England. The guidelines for teaching and learning outlined in the Framework documents are adapted to suit our local and global environment. Priority aims of this Framework are:

  • to promote pupils' spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of learners at the school and within society
  • to prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life

By studying the subjects listed below, the pupils at CCS are given a broad and balanced curriculum. The core subjects taught are:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science

Other subjects taught are:

  • Art and Design
  • Bahasa Indonesia
  • Design and Technology (D&T)
  • Geography
  • History
  • Information, Communication Technology (ICT)
  • Music
  • Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE)
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Religious Awareness (RA)

Citizenship is incorporated into PSHE. Through a variety of learning activities, pupils are equipped with knowledge and skills that will help them play an effective role in public life and they increase their understanding of different issues and social and political systems around the world.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) support may be offered to pupils whose first language is not English. This need will be determined by CCS’ teachers, in accordance with the School’s policy.

Key Stage 3 pupils enjoy using all specialised teaching spaces, including the large Science laboratory, the Computer Room and the Music Room. For PE, pupils enjoy regular use of the covered Multi Function Hall and the sports field and 25 metre swimming pool at the Canggu Club.

Pastoral Care

Print
It is essential that pupils in this important stage of their education are supported in an age-appropriate way. Pastoral Care teachers are assigned to each class/year group to assist and advise pupils in a similar way to a class teacher in younger year levels. In Key Stage 3, Pastoral Care Groups meet for twenty minutes each day and a variety of activities take place that relate to general organisation, homework, peer interaction and current events. Pastoral care teachers work with pupils individually, in small groups or as a class group, depending on the type and purpose of activity.

Assessment and Examinations

Print

A combination of strategies is used to assess class work and assignments. Tests are completed at the end of units of work in most subjects. Towards the end of each year, pupils also complete tests that are designed to show the level of progress throughout the year.

As Year 9 is the end of Key Stage 3, pupils complete the Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) from England in English, Mathematics and Science, even though these tests are now optional for this Key Stage. Pupils in Years 7 and 8 complete interim tests in English and Mathematics so that their progress throughout Key Stage 3 can be monitored.
