Key Stage 1

Introduction

Print

123Key Stage 1 includes Years 1 and 2, with pupils ranging from five to seven years of age. There are two classes per year group. The spacious, air conditioned classrooms offer a stimulating learning environment for the pupils and include colourful displays and facilities for creative play and hands-on activities. Being part of a larger school means pupils benefit from the specialist teachers and facilities that are available for Music, ICT and PE. Facilities for PE include the covered Multi Function Hall and the sports field and swimming pools of the Canggu Club.

Pupils also have the opportunity to play outside in our adventure playground which is shaded by trees, grassed areas and handball courts.

During Key Stage 1, pupils build on their Early Years experiences, continuing to develop their skills and understanding of subjects through theme based learning. Whenever possible, subjects are integrated across the curriculum as this helps pupils make links from one learning activity to another.

Curriculum

Key Stage 1At CCS, a British style of education is delivered through the National Curriculum for England, which is adapted to our local and international environment. The core subjects taught are:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Science

Other subjects taught are:

  • Art and Design
  • Bahasa Indonesia
  • Design and Technology (D&T)
  • Geography
  • History
  • Information, Communication Technology (ICT)
  • Music
  • Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE)
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Religious Awareness (RA)

Pupils’ intellectual, creative, social, personal and physical development is fostered by a combination of classroom and specialist teachers, and supported by our full-time teaching assistants. Teaching strategies are varied according to the lesson and the needs of each individual child. Regular field trips also take place to extend knowledge and bring more meaning to classroom activities. Weekly assemblies are often used to showcase pupils’ work and to provide opportunities for public speaking and performance. At all times, pupils are encouraged to become independent learners who cooperate with others.

As Year 2 is the end of Key Stage 1, pupils in this year level complete the Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) from England during Term 4.  These tests assess pupils in Literacy and Numeracy and provide a level of attainment for each child.  These results are used by the School to plan work for individual pupils and the class as a whole, and to monitor progress through Key Stage 2.
